Frazer Scarfe Teaching Video

A new video by up-and-coming young artist Fraser Scarfe dispels some of the myths and preconceptions about painting for the inexperienced. In it you are guided through the painting process from start to finish. Scarfe works on two key paintings: a Lincolnshire landscape overlooking the cathedral and the arching cloisters inside it. In 2009 he won a residency at Lincoln’s famous cathedral. Through the residency period, Scarfe organized two large community art projects in Lincolnshire, committed as he is to bring art to the people.

Scafe’s practice is based upon a strong foundation in drawing and strict observation which aims to capture the drama of landscape or environments. In the DVD Scarfe guides you through the value of outdoor sketches and impressions. The work develops through focusing on an experience of place, to avoid the usual clichés involved with landscape painting.

With sketchbook work on location, hints and tips on what to look out for when working up your drawings, and guidance through the final picture, Fraser lets you discover the joys of Lincolnshire.

In the studio he shows you how to build your work by doing painterly sketches, not detailed pre-planning. He is also adamant about showing you what the paint can do and helping you to understand it.Fraser's easy-to-follow instructions encourage you to be freer and more confident. His guiding idea is that creativity is a process and he wants you to enjoy it.
