Pop M’Art Social Painting

Chroma has sponsored a whole lot of fun by supporting a new not for profit venture in Melbourne called Pop M’Art. Maggie Chan and her volunteer crew have enabled social painting since the beginning of March 2012 to celebrate the joy of painting. Pop Mart’s gatherings have been running in gorgeous Melbourne locations such as parks, bars, lane ways, the Abbotsford Convent, and even the Eureka Skydeck 88 to make painting accessible, share experience and explore fact that anyone can do it!

Capitalizing on social media and the freedom that our communications mobility now gives us, Pop Mart have popped up in so many great locations with fantastic energy over the last 4 months. Mainly taking place on weekends, the locations and full details were announced and broadcast via email and social networks, such as Pop M’art’s website, Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare, between a week to 3 days before the events. Participants booked and paid a fee and had all their material requirements catered for. The events have been really well patronised .

They have focused on the experiential nature of painting rather than outcomes. While some of the results have been great, this approach allowed inexperienced painters freedom from inhibition, with an accent on enjoying new friendships. Each session lasted a maximum of 2 hours with individual bookings having been arranged for groups between 10-15 people. Even a few group meetings were specifically arranged. Painting took in places like Memoirs Boutique, with a live model, and the Transit Cocktail Lounge, Federation Square over looking the Yarra River.

Pop M’art are now planning a Grand Finale Charity Auction to round off their activities.. Calling for the return of between 150 and 200 art works from prior participants, an art installation will be assembled and an art auction is planned for June 7th. This wonderful event will take place in the Abbotsford Convent Industrial School from 6-9.30pm with all proceeds going to the Starlight Foundation. It is sure to be an exciting, fun and high energy happening.

Take a look at some of the locations, participants and their art works from this great experiment in social painting.
