Tantalizing Texture!

As a painter, I am drawn to all the textures that exist in nature. Texture can be shiny and slick, thick and mineral-like, soft and fluffy, hard and spiky – combinations are endless. It can be a challenge to create some of these textures with acrylics, but if you paint with Interactive and consider adding Atelier Impasto Gel and Atelier Modelling Compound to your paint box, a whole world of possibilities opens up.

For example, Impasto Gel is a milky water-based gel that is transparent when dry. This gel can be incorporated directly into your painting for added gloss and texture, or it can be applied to your surface first and then overpainted. Because it is a clear gel, it can also be applied directly on top of a painting for unique effects and a high gloss. The painting “Susquehanna River” used this last technique, creating a very interesting surface on a soft blended painting.

Modeling Compound is a very thick, textural paste that is flexible and is used to create strong textural interest at any stage in a painting’s process. It is white and dries white. This mixture is normally applied with a palette knife. It can be mixed directly with Interactive or it can be applied directly to your surface and painted on. If you mix Interactive with Modeling Compound, it can affect your values because it is white. “Coneflowers” used Modeling Compound mixed directly with Interactive, and has a physicality of presence despite the small size of the piece; the painting is only 9”x12”.

It is important to note that Modeling Compound and Impasto Gel take a longer time to dry, and once dry, will not be able to be re-opened. But if you are looking for an easy and economical way to add texture and presence to your work, you can’t beat these products. I encourage you to try them the next time you paint!

    As a professional artist, tutor and demonstrator working and teaching art classes and workshops in Southern Spain. In the summer months we experience temperatures and climatic variations similar to those that have been mentioned here as topics. We were recently commissioned to paint a large scale mural, painted directly on to an outside wall to add interest to a seating area. The time frame for this giant botanical was August, and required mixing a palette and climbing steps and access towers to paint. The drying times where, as you can imagine extreme. Consequently we had to employ every trick in the artist armoury to enable us to complete on time!
    So adding retarder to water spray is OK!
